About the Classes

Most academies follow a similar format. They are taught by a College of Marin instructor or counselor and guide students through career exploration, including different career paths, required education, and available resources. Many academies also feature guest speakers who provide real-world industry insights.

Some academies are more hands-on (no prior experience required):

  • Game Design – Students build a game from scratch.
  • AI for Graphic Design – Students use graphic design software to create projects.
  • Business & Entrepreneurship – Students develop a business idea, pitch it to peers, and receive instructor feedback.

Careers in Business focuses on general career exploration, helping students learn about a range of roles in the business world. In contrast, Business & Entrepreneurship is more project-based, with an emphasis on creating and pitching a business idea.

Health Careers is a shortened version of Health Occupations, running four days instead of eight. Health Careers is taught by the Counseling Department, while Health Occupations is taught by the Nursing Department. Health Occupations typically serves about 30 students, while Health Careers can accommodate approximately 60 students.

How are Applications Reviewed?

Our Summer Career Academies provide meaningful career exploration opportunities for students across Marin County. Because space is limited and interest is high, we use a holistic review process to build each cohort. Admission is not first-come, first-served. Space is limited, and late applications are automatically waitlisted. Selections are made after all applications have been collected and reviewed.

What We Consider

  • Diversity of perspectives and experiences
  • Commitment to full participation
  • Student interest and motivation
  • Completeness and thoughtfulness of the application
  • Representation across all Marin County schools and communities
